Living … One day at a time

Bright blue sun filled sky this morning.

Welcome to the weekend.

Last night we had rain.

This morning we have “black ice.”

I have a decision to make regarding Alvin’s 10:00 a.m. appointment with Dr. K.

It is a regular one for nails and anal glands.

I am thinking that I should ask to see if I can push it to a later time today before they close at 2:00 p.m.

Our sidewalks are a skating rink and even with the ice picks on your boots, it can/could be dangerous walking to the clinic.

Some photos from last night.

Humphrey joined us for a couple of hours.

He loves Alvin’s bed curled up looking at the Christmas tree, so cute.

Then the rain.

Yes, it was.

Raining last night.

I was so wishing that I had left my downspout connected.

Now you see about the black ice this morning after it froze.

The temperature is not cold but enough to make it dangerous for walkers and for driving of course.

I threw in some photos of my Snowman and Snowwoman, just because they are so cute.

Yesterday at work, we said goodbye and congratulations to a friend on her retirement after 27 years of work at our office.

It was very sad and exciting all at once.

I am happy for her as she looks forward to some major changes.

Well I guess this will be short as it is almost time for the clinic to open and I want to see if we are able to change Alvin’s appointment time.

I wish you all an awesome Saturday.

Be safe.

With kindness and respect, always.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Wednesday the 28th day of November, 2018.

We missed the first freezing rain that went through our area but woke up to ice.

Appears that overnight we had freezing rain.

Time to be extra careful whether walking or driving.

I can see the glare ice on my sidewalk.

BE CAREFUL.

Tonight our friend Humphrey the Cat is going to be spending some time with me and the Alvin.

Also a few hours tomorrow night.

It will be interesting to see how spending the evening together goes.

Now both are used to seeing each other.

Both are used to cats and dogs and dogs and cats.

They were together the other night and so growling or hissing happening.

I will be careful watching them.

Also have to ensure that Humphrey does not scratch anything with this claws.

Will have to semi prepare things and perhaps bring one of his smaller scratching posts over to my house.

I am excited to see them interact.

Perhaps they will just say hello and then go there own ways?

Who knows.

Time will tell.

Earlier I saw some cars and a truck drive by so people are out driving.

Our temperatures are to reach +3 later today.

The joys of winter.

I should write a book on the JOYS OF WINTER IN CANADA.

Certainly could fill a book with our Canadian Winters.

The GOOD, The BAD and The UGLY?

What do you think?

Well I am thinking of our drive to work this morning and hoping that the City has been out sanding/salting whatever they put on the ice.

It won’t help 100% but some traction is better than nothing.

If you are reading this and living in Edmonton area – please be careful.

Have an awesome Wednesday.

Special Hello to:  EVERYONE TODAY – YOU ARE ALL SO GREAT.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day ….

Good Morning and Welcome to Monday the 27th day of November, 2017.

Well we have a bit of snow ….. the sticky stuff …… now covering the ice.

At least this should make our walking a bit more safe.

Alvin needs to go for a walk tonight.

We will do it.

Update on the clothes dryer saga.

This is the third week without one.

I have been air drying my clothes, which works fine.

Thankfully I have a closet full of towels and bedding so that is okay.

I will have a ton of towels and bedding to wash and dry once the dryer is working again.

I helped my friend with the dryer.

Found out that it was not of the fuses as he had thought.

So we ended up taking the drum out of the dryer and VOILE it was the heating element.

We could tell as you could see that the coil had broke apart in one spot.

Apparently that is what should happen.

My friend is going to find me a heating element.

Luckily this is something he will be able to fix.

I guess if we can take it apart we can put it back together.

Learning lots.

Not that I want to do it by myself next time but I know what to check and what to watch out for ……

Interesting.

I mailed all of my Christmas cards that were to be mailed yesterday but ONE …. it was the ONE that has to go out of the country.

The Post Office did not open until noon and I could not hang around that long so will have to get that done sometime this week.

Also got groceries …. I was surprised to see how busy both stores were ……. drugstore and grocery store.

Done for another week.

Well almost time to get my things on and head out for the bus.

Debating on which coat to wear and am grateful that I am able to have that debate.

Take care if you are in the middle of winter where you live …… drive carefully ….. whether walking or driving or riding a bike …. take your time…… those extra two seconds could save your life and they

will not get you to your destination noticeably sooner.

Happy Monday.

Special Hello: to friends …. we are grateful to have you.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Friday the 14th day of October, 2016.

YAY, today is Friday and we woke up to dry ground.

Appears we missed the overnight freezing rain and snow mix.

One down “192” days to go.

You are likely wondering what “192” days represents.

Just a quick calculation of the length of our possible winter.

Not so bad.

One less day with a pile of snow or even one morning with less snow is great.

Walking to the bus in a couple feet of snow when your legs are only three feet long is not much fun.

Please be giggling now.

I will admit somedays it is funny watching me wade through the snowbanks.

Last year I had to hold onto the rose bushes for support along the walk way as there was so much snow.

I got to work and was pulling out leaves from my hair, coat and scarf.

In retrospect it was truly funny.

Felt like I was on a winter adventure.

Trying to walk on this snow bank while holding onto the rose bushes.

Trying not to damage them.

The big thing is “snow removal.”

In the wintertime residential areas are the last ones to have the snow removed.

If you have to leave home in the early morning you are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

I have been fortunate as my “adventures” have been few and far between.

Sounds like this might be the winter to change that.

Oh well.

That is okay.

Well almost time to get this show on the road.

I hope that wherever you are …. whatever you are doing……that you are safe and warm.

If you have to drive ….. watch your speed ….. ABSOLUTELY NO TEXTING or TALKING ON THE CELL PHONE….

Your life and the lives of others are so precious.

If you must send a message or take a call – pull over.

Also when you are pulling back out into traffic …. look behind you.

I saw a young woman pulling over the other day in my neighbourhood …. sent a text and pulled out without looking …. sure enough there was

a truck right there and if he had not swerved they would have collided.

Just a reminder to be aware.

Okay time to go.

Happy Friday All….

It would be so nice if there was coffee ready when I got to work this morning.

Thank you.

Special Hello to: all my friends all over the world.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Wednesday the 10th day of February, 2016.

Yesterday was about + 10 degrees celsius ….. crazy.

WOW, how did that happen?

I am pretty sure it was February 1st the day before yesterday ….

Oh well ….. winter is passing and with it comes the arrival of spring.

My favourite season.

I did note the other day that the bunnies are starting to turn brown.

How lovely …..

Sure have not seen as many of them as we used to when I first moved here from Regina.

That being said ….. there has been so much construction in this area I can see why.

All of the poor animals displaced because we keeping encroaching on their homes.

Sure wished that we could live together without displacing them.

Everyday you hear of another species that is now extinct.

I feel for all of these creatures.

Perhaps it is a dream of mine and some others that PEACE will reign someday over this planet.

Is it possible to happen in my lifetime?

I do not know.

Sure would be nice.

When you hear of people starving and living in absolute poverty and then the billions countries spend on war ….. what is wrong with that?

If all of the money was put into finding cures for diseases, spent on the environment and such ….. well that would be great.

We can make a difference …. one person at a time.

Be good to your environment ….. small things make a big difference.

Turn off the lights …… walk instead of driving ….. don’t toss that coffee cup…

Please ….

Well it is time to put the finishing touches on before I head out to work.

I hope that you have an awesome day.

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Tuesday the 24th day of November, 2015.

It is actually quite a beautiful morning even though we woke up to over a foot of snow.

Last night after work I shovelled the entire deck, the driveway and the front.

So first thing on the agenda this morning before Mr. Alvin could even go outside because quite frankly I would have lost him in the snow.

Fun shovelling at 5:00 a.m.

Thank goodness he is mostly black but he is not super tall and in small places he would have been completely covered.

So I shovelled while he barked in the house ( I shovelled very fast ).

Then he joined me outside.

He likes the snow and ran about even in some places that I had not shovelled at that point.

I knew he was looking for his chewie.

Yes the whitish coloured chew treat ….. I had seen him bury it in the snow bank that I had created last night against the fence on the deck (side that joins to my neighbour).

Fortunately I had a good idea where it was so I shovelled over to it and voile we found it.

So then he would not settle down to do his business so I finally coaxed him to at least “pee.”

Sounds funny …..

Anyway it will take longer with the new boots (you know the tall ones that lace up from Mark’s Work  Warehouse) to get dressed for work.

I would imagine that my walk to the bus will be interesting.

There will be lots of snow to plough through so I am “excited” for the workout.

Mr. Alvin needs to go out again so I will cut this short.

I hope that wherever you are ….. if there is lots of snow ….. take extra time …. whether shovelling …. walking ….. driving.

It took us one hour yesterday to go from downtown to West Edmonton Mall ….normally takes the bus about 20 minutes.

So I was about 1/2 hour getting home last night which was great compared to some people.

The good old bus.

Take care …. be safe out there.

Special Hello to: my friends and family on the prairies ….. it is now WINTER.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day…..

Good Morning and Welcome to Friday the 1st day of May, 2015.

Well I was off to a great start this morning.

As I was writing the first line in my gratitude journal about 5:00 a.m. …..

I wrote “I cannot believe that today is the first day of Easter”

I looked at the words and then started to giggle.

Really, no idea where that came from but it was funny.

What a great way to start a Friday.

Laughing.

Laughing at oneself, no less.

I know that today is going to be great.

Alvin likely thought his Momma had lost her senses.

On top of being the first day of May and one month closer to summer ….. I noticed that it was starting to get light out at 5:30 instead of 6:00 a.m.

Note to self: remember to flip all of my “paper” calendars to May.

They are forecasting some rain and that would be so nice.

Oh, I must share a few of the most wonderful things that happened to me on my first day back to work from being sick:

– a co-worker had written me a hand-made thank you card in appreciation of “me” and two home baked cookies

-another co-worker had returned all of my phone calls from the past couple of days

-others showed appreciation by making sure that I was okay

-others took on a few tasks to help me out

-my daughter picked up a jean jacket from a swap that they are having at her work (she is always thinking of her Momma)

-after work while waiting for the bus I noticed a gal that usually catches the bus with me and who lives in the same neighbourhood …. she waited for a couple of lights to come over and ask me if I wanted a ride home.  She had driven to work.  So thoughtful considering she had to walk the total opposite way to her car.

WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY ….. it was so wonderful.

It is the little things that make a person glad to be alive.

I wish you only grand “little things” today to make you feel as great as I did yesterday.

Have a great Friday.

Gotta go.

Time to catch the bus and of course, snuggle for a couple of minutes with me Alvin.

Special Hello to: my sister ….

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day……

Good Morning and Welcome to Saturday the 4th day of April, 2015.

Well it is overcast and snowing here in Edmonton.

On the deck the snow is sticking as it makes touchdown.

Just a steady stream of rain-like snow coming down.

When I look out of my front window the streets and sides are only wet.

What a start to the weekend, yesterday was bright and sunny, and I think it was 15 degrees celsius here.

Now today exact opposite.

Well today is my last shift at the store.

Last night I baked a bunch of chocolate chip cookies to take to the staff this morning.

To show my appreciation for them all.

I am both excited and sad for this day.

Excited to have Friday night and the weekends back but sad to not to see all of my friends.

Today will be bittersweet.

Alvin is intently gazing out of our temporary bedroom window.

The kids move into their new house on the 16th which is right around the corner.

So much happening right now.

Still busy but at least now it will be on my own timetable.

I hope that if you are travelling on this Easter long weekend that you have clear skies if you are flying and dry safe roads for driving.

I hope that you are surrounded by the love of family and friends.

I hope that you are surrounded by laughter ….. always good to have some giggles.

I hope that perhaps you reach out to someone less fortunate than yourself.

I hope that if you see an animal in distress you help them.

May this weekend be all about love and respect for yourself and others.

Always remembers “others” includes all beings …..

Have a great Saturday.

Special Hello to: all those folks who read my blog, thank you so much.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day…..

Good Morning and Welcome to Saturday the 30th and second last day of August, 2014.

It is bright and sunny here in Edmonton as we approach noon – one hour away.

The kids are off to Canmore and I had a wonderful visit with my neighbour “So” …… she is Miss Aussie’s Mom….

Me and the puppies are hanging out.

Doing laundry and housework and also high on the priority list is cleaning out the bathroom fans.

Isn’t it funny how one never seems to notice when they are clean but once they become “dusty” ….. your eyes naturally are averted there.

Oh well.

I am so excited for supper as my friend who is more like a sister and her daughter and grand-daughter (niece and great-niece) are visiting from Regina.

They are in Edmonton to do some back to school shopping at our “WEST EDMONTON MALL” ……. it will be busy there today for sure.

Last weekend before most of the kids go back to school.

I am so excited to see them.

“H” will likely be taller than me now ….. she turned 12 this summer.

Well my darlings I am off to get some laundry done and then fetch the ladder to clean the three bathroom fans.

I wish you all a happy and safe long labour day weekend.

Thank you for reading my blog.

Special Hello:  to all those who are travelling drive carefully …. no texting or talking on the mobile phones when you are driving. We want you back safe and sound.  Enjoy your travels.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day…..

Good Morning and Welcome to Tuesday the 19th day of August, 2014.

PICTURES SAY A THOUSAND WORDS:

scan0249

This photo of my sister, my youngest brother and me was taken in the early 80’s.

All I can say is “too much blush, Carol” …..

This weekend we three are getting together and driving to visit our remaining brother.

One coming from Regina, Saskatchewan and the other from Calgary, Alberta to pick me UP.

Then we drive about two hours from Edmonton to visit “J.”

P1080332

Here is “J” ….. he really isn’t big on having his photo taken.

He is quite handsome when he is not “scowling” at the photographer……

I am so looking forward to being together with my siblings and talking about life.

We always manage to have a few good laughs along the way.

Well time to go to work.

Took me awhile to locate these photos.

I hope that you all have or take an opportunity when it comes along to spend time with your family.

I am so excited for this weekend.

I will miss me Alvin and the kids of course …..

Happy Tuesday.

Special Hello to: my siblings ……

Always, Carol and Alvin
