Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to the 2nd day of April, 2016.

It is a bright and sunny morning here in Edmonton.

I am up and showered – freshened up.

Time to write in my gratitude journal, have breakfast (share my banana with Alvin) and then share a pot of coffee with my neighbour “S.”

This morning I am off to clean-up the trash around the neighbourhood.

It does not look like I even went out about a month ago as there is so much.

So I will put on some comfortable old shoes, my sunglasses, grab some garbage bags and some disposable non-latex gloves and my keys and be on my way.

Whoops almost forgot my handy dandy GARBAGE PICKER UPPERS…..

It will likely take me about 1-2 hours to clean things up as I will do a big loop and of course, the walk-way to 62nd Avenue (which is CRITICAL again).

I know for a fact that MacDonalds and StarBucks do not throw their coffee cups into the wind so that they blow into our neighbourhood.

Why oh why cannot people just take them home and throw them into the garbage.

Perhaps too easy.

Are people really that stupid?

Uncaring.

I just do not believe that say you throw your StarBucks coffee cup into the bushes/grass on the walkway today.

Then someone comes behind you and does the same thing.

Everyday you walk there and it just looks worse and worse.

Does that not bother anyone except me?

Anyway I am going to make it beautiful.

The way it should be.

My wish is to educate people.

Also I am going to plead once again with the City and the Neighbourhood Association to please put up a garbage bin.

I hope that next time you are walking about enjoying nature and sipping on your coffee or cold drink that you will think about taking the cup home instead of throwing it onto the ground.

Now obviously I realize that not everyone does this or else our world would be completely filled with cups.

Have a great weekend.

Please keep your neighbourhood clean and tidy.

All you have to do is keep in front of your house clean and secure trash on pick up day.

Thank you.

This is my public service announcement.

Have a great Saturday.

No poems for me today …..

Special Hello to:  to all those folks who help to keep our planet clean and tidy.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day…..

Good Morning and Welcome to Sunday the 12th day of April, 2015.

It is a peaceful, quiet, partially overcast morning here in Edmonton.

I am so enjoying being at home on the weekend.

This is my first real weekend at home without working at the store.

I do miss my friends ….

Yesterday I had a full day.

Started out by taking Mr. Alvin to the Vet for his regular six month appointment.

He does not like having his nails done.

Poor guy ….. he was not happy.

The rest of the visit was great.

He loved the treat ….. silly boy.

Also he was so happy to see his Jenn as she only works some Saturdays.

After arriving back home I changed and had a nice cup of coffee before hitting the streets.

Hitting the streets near my home to clean up the trash.

It always amazes me the amount of trash that is strewn about.

I so wished that I would have had my camera with me yesterday so that you could see.

The worst spot was in the walkway between our neighbourhood and a busy artery.

It was literally covered in MacDonald’s bags, coffee and drink cups from Dairy Queen, StarBucks and various places.

There was also broken “beer” bottles and other glass, food containers, plastic bags wrapped around the branches of the rose bushes.

That is the other thing about cleaning this spot as it is lined with rose bushes, the sidewalk in between and then grass on the other side.

The Styrofoam packing pieces had been broken and there were small pieces everywhere …. down to the small round ones.

I did my very best to pick them up … finding that picking them up with leaves kept them from sticking to my “disposable latex” gloves.

There were a great many children and adults that walked by during my 1.5 hours there and I made sure that they all had a lesson in picking up the trash and what it does to the environment.  Example being the bits of styrofoam that are ingested by birds and wildlife and even some of our pets.  Birds and animals then feel as though they are full as it tricks the stomach (cannot be digested), and they eventually starve to death.  How horrible is that!  It was not my intention to give everyone a lecture but I felt that I must.  People just get so wrapped up in their own little worlds that they forget the damage that is being done.  We are “killing” this beautiful planet that we call home.  It is time.  Time for everyone to smarten up.

As it took longer than I had planned the other half of the neighbourhood will have to wait until next Saturday.

It was the weirdest thing as I was only about six houses from home when the wind got up and blew dirt and trash from down the street from the other direction.

I could hardly hold on to the garbage bag.

Thank goodness I was close to home.

Well that was an experience.

I filled three bags of garbage and carried them home to my garage.

YIKES.

Once home I completely changed, brushed the dirt from my teeth and cleaned up.

Put on a pot of coffee and made a snack.

GLAD TO BE INSIDE as it started to rain and the wind blew and blew.

The balance of the day I spent doing laundry and odds and ends.

Even though the garbage makes me a bit “mad” and so sad I am so grateful that I am now home on the weekends so that I can keep the neighbourhood clean.

Perhaps I shall organize another neighbourhood cleanup.

Also I want to do some teaching ……

No wonder the planet is in such bad shape ….. it starts at home ….. in your neighbourhood.

If we cannot keep it clean how can we ever keep the planet clean.

The planet is our neighbourhood.

So on this Sunday I am so grateful ….. grateful to be at home.

Alvin is curled up on the bed dreaming away, and I love it.

I wish you a peaceful, happy Sunday.

Special Hello to: my friend “P” who is recovering from cancer surgery and treatment and is on the road to being well.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day…..

Good Morning and Welcome to Thursday the 5th day of February, 2015.

Not sure where this great morning evaporated to but it is almost time to leave as I type these words.

Just wanted to share an experience with you:

Last night I met two different women on my bus ride home.

One on the first leg of the trip …. an older woman.

Face filled with beautiful lines and you could just tell she had a good heart.

She shared stories and I as well.

We found in our 20 minute trip together that we both clean up our neighbourhoods for Capital City Clean-Up.

I so enjoyed our conversation.

The next woman got on later after the other woman had departed.

She had her son with her in a stroller.

I found out during our conversation that her family had come to Canada from Iraq about one and one half years ago.

We spoke of many things but I was interested to hear that learning the English language was the hard part because it is filled with adverbs, adjectives and the like.

She said words that sound the same but mean something different.

This was so interesting to hear coming from a woman who was highly educated in her country; a teacher.

I so enjoyed our conversation ….

I must run to catch my ride (before they leave the house …. they won’t leave without me.).

What a glorious ride home.

I am so blessed to met some incredible people and listen to their stories.

The little boy sat in the stroller meticulously eating MacDonald’s french fries with ketchup and with the other hand some ice cream.

His mother explained he does not like the meat and bun and just throws it.

Okay time to go.

Special Hello to: all those people who leave their countries for new beginnings elsewhere.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day….

Good Morning and Welcome to Thursday the 16th day of January, 2014.

WOW, what weather we are having.

It was plus 9 celsius here in Edmonton yesterday morning and to be plus 4-5 today.

VERY WINDY ….

Very early yesterday morning I heard a lot of banging and after we were up (4:45); I opened the front door to check on my Christmas wreath and tree …. tree down …. wreath up.

So I quickly brought them inside.

I am certain lots of things will have blown into the next county ……

I think it would have been easier walking home last night from the bus on a pair of skates than in my winter boots.

A normal 5 minute walk took me 20.

I took careful little steps.

I figure better to take longer and stay upright than falling on my head or back.

I like to be careful whenever possible.

Between the wind and the ice ….. WOW.

The power was off yesterday morning when we got downtown so I asked my carpool to drop me off.

I figured easier for me to walk as they had to wait through the heavy traffic using the four way stop method.

I did hear a few cars honking ….. people just don’t remember how it works.  Simple as that.

On my walk the wind blew and the sidewalks were icy and it was dark (no lights).

So amazingly enough I made it safe and sound to the office only to find out of course, our power was out so they were sending us home until noon.

Lucky for me some coworkers were on their way to MacDonald’s for coffee to wait and see.

Just as we got there and had started to order our coffee …. another coworker came along to say the LIGHTS were on.

So we all went back to the office …. only to find out that our computer system was down….

So it was a crazy day.

Thank goodness that wind has died down.

Although it has helped dry things out.

I know what I will be doing this weekend … besides taking down my Christmas tree and decorations……. picking at the ice …..

NOTE:  Alvin decided to climb up the snowbank on the deck ….. that bank goes into the space between the garage and the fence and to the neighbours…..now I will have to watch him with an eagle eye….. LOL.

Special Hello: to my fellow Western Canadians …. stay safe and upright.

Always, Carol and Alvin
