Living … One day at a time.

Hello,

Well Monday morning is here.

It is windy and snowing.

My ride texted earlier and of course, I did not see that message.

But as I was going to head into the shower I had a thought that I should check my phone regarding ride.

Sure enough.

Now that is intuition.

Anyway, was running as tad late.

Somehow the body just wants to sleep …. windy and snow might be part of the reason.

I am ready now.

But will have to cut this short as Mr. Alvin would like to go outside and I am going to catch the bus.

Was made at myself for not going out and picking up bus tickets as I have to give the driver a $5.00 bill for one ride this morning.

Luckily I have enough money to go out on break from work and pick up bus tickets.

ARGH.

Oh well, life is learning and always throwing little curveballs.

I hope that you have a great Monday.

Wishing you peace, joy and good health.

Love and Laughter.

Fill your days with kindness and respect.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Living … One day at a time.

Good Morning and Hello.

Welcome to Wednesday.

Mid week day.

Earlier this morning when I was outside with Alvin ….. there was tiny snowballs being hurled toward the ground.

Mother Nature at her best.

The grass crunched under my feet.

Lots of leaves covering the grass having blown in from the front and neighbouring yards.

Reminder for one last rake before we have snow cover.

Hopefully I have that opportunity this evening.

Well today is our off-site Staff Meeting.

Even though I do not like time away from my work; I really don’t mind the staff meeting.

There usually are a variety of topics and something guest speakers and the FOOD is great.

Nice to kick back and listen …. no phones …. no computers …..

Last night Alvin and I enjoyed our walk.

It was cold so we stopped by at Teddy’s house.

As always Teddy and his Mom were so EXCITED to see us and asked us to warm up and stay for tea.

Well Alvin did not have tea ….

He did have a treat …..

It was lovely to have an actual conversation with someone who would reply.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

I have never met anyone like Teddy’s Mom.

She is always over the moon happy to see us.

So welcoming.

Both Teddy’s parents are such wonderful people.

I am, we are blessed to call them friends.

One of my nephews called me last night.

We had such a great conversation.

Another reminder to call people.

I must get better about calling family and friends.

I am blessed to have a ride to the meeting with a co-worker and home.

A little birdie reached out and told me that there is going to be a parcel in the mailbox when I return home this evening.

Cannot imagine who that might have been / be.

Looks like this is going to be “our” lucky day.

It all started with me accidentally stepping on some poop in the backyard …. thankfully with my yard shoes.

Guess this means I need a stronger flashlight.

The one that I have is very small ….. like a keychain one.

Time for batteries …. note to self ….. put BATTERIES ON THE GROCERY LIST.

Yup, I will …. right now.

Done.

No more stepping on poop and then having to take 10 minutes to clean said shoes.

ARGH.

That is what happens when it is dark outside.

Another good reason to get batteries and rake the leaves.

Well time to put the finishing touches on before my ride arrives.

Alvin will have to go outside one last time.

Nice to be leaving later for a change.

Happy Happy Wednesday.

Reminder to myself …. always be KIND AND RESPECTFUL.

We may be kind, I may be kind  but watch on the respect.

It is easy to be less so.

But so import to be 100%.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Living … One day at a time.

Hello,

Well this is not how I had planned or expected these past few days to be.

In a blink of an eye life can change and does quite often.

Still don’t know the actual cause of Alvin’s “grief” but at least we have medication.

So shall I start at the beginning as I have not posted much over the past few days.

Last Friday was a regular day …. worked ….. my daughter gave me a ride home …. I had stopped at renewed my driver license.

I do think that I may have posted that information …. after my daughter left we went right into our regular after work.

I took him for a walk followed by supper.

After supper we had been invited out to a friends house.

Now with the weather taking a turn I was unable to take Alvin with me.

So he stayed home.

I was gone from 7:00 until 10:25 p.m.

As usual I left the television on and lights.

He was happy to see me.

We went outside and then upstairs to bed.

From that point until this moment things changed.

He was not himself.

So did he eat something?

Or perhaps it was stress over the last few weeks with the significant change to our routine that being my vacation.

Being away from home and me.

He has become even more stuck to routine as he ages.

At some point I believe around 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning …. he needed to go outside.

Then it was all downhill for the boy.

He was shaking …. had bad bad GAS …. so bad it startled me and scared him.

The gas blow-out was so bad it appeared to have ruptured a blood vessel.

So blood then was added to it all.

We have been one poopy mess for days.

The gas factor continued until yesterday.

We were up and down every couple of hours from Friday night until we slept for six hours on Sunday night.

Monday and last nights we slept until the alarm went off.

He has definitely got upset intestines, “tummy” and his bum is raw.

If you remember Mr. Alvin is not so fond of car rides, not at all.

Keeping watch to ensure that he was not dehydrated (still drank lots of water during this whole episode), I decided to wait until his Vet was open on Tuesday.

I called them twice or three times on Tuesday morning only to get their automated message.

This concerned me as I knew they were to be opened.

So I just decided to walk over there with Alvin.

When we arrived we found a fish tank with four turtles, large ones sitting in front of the door.

I tried the door and it was locked.

The OPEN signed was not turned on.

I peeked through the window and no lights or movement.

So decided to take a photo of the turtles and head home quickly.

We got home and I called our City line for assistance.

I was able to get someone from Animal Control – Peace Officer to go and pick up the turtles.

So now what.

I was texting with my daughter and son-in-law as Alvin still had diarrhea and needed to be checked.

Clearly nothing was going to stop and heal without medical intervention.

My daughter remembered the Spay/Neuter Clinic not far away from us and they said in their ad – they took new clients.

I was stressed at this point …. between me Alvin and the turtles.

Before leaving home I had perked a pot of coffee but only drank a sip before unplugging it.

So I decided to have a mug of coffee and just sit for a few minutes.

Alvin was okay for the moment and the turtles were going to be rescued.

Just breathe …..

What a morning.

After the coffee, I was going to call the new VET but then had this strange feeling that I should try our Vet again.

The receptionist answered, I was dumbfounded.

She explained that she had mixed up the dates therefore came in later than she was scheduled.

Our Vet arrives at 10:00 and I was there just after 9:00 a.m.

What a relief.

I explained what had happened with our first visit and the turtles and what was going on with Mr. Alvin.

She said the Animal Control were there and that the Clinic had an arrangement with several different animal rescue groups.

One of them had dropped off the turtles thinking someone would be there at 8:00 a.m.

I was able to make an appointment for Mr. Alvin to see his own Doctor at 2:30 p.m.

What a relief.

So we just relaxed and waited until it was time to go.

Of course, during that time Alvin had one of his small meals.

We left the house about 2:10 p.m. as I thought we may have some stops along the way which we did.

Poor boy.

Once arriving at the Clinic, he was weighed and we went into one of the exam rooms.

The Vet Assistant came in and took his heart rate and then his temperature.

I knew when I asked about where the thermometer had to be inserted and she said his “bum” that things were not going to be pretty.

He cried so loud and sharp that we both jumped.

My poor, poor little guy.

That would have hurt so bad as his bum was raw.

After that we waited a few minutes for his Doctor.

I went through our last few days and what was going on in our house.

I explained about our trip and the changes to his routine.

She asked me some questions.

At the end of the exam she said he will need some Probiotics to heal his intestines, his insides and Metronidazole to stop the diarrhea and some salve for his raw bum.

Upon receiving instructions we were out front to pay.

I also had her clean his ears as I had not been able to these past few days.

After payment and final run through instructions we were on our way.

Upon returning home I gave him his medication.

Alvin’s Doctor had put some salve on his bum at the clinic.

I am happy to say that since his first medication there has been no diarrhea which is great.

Doctor, our Vet said she would like him to go one whole day with no bowel movement and only peeing.

Which so far so good.

Medication.

Well the Prebiotic is a chewable tablet and there has been no issue with that but the other pill the one that will stop the diarrhea well that has been another story.

I told his Doctor “that he is such a foodie there will be no problem with him taking the pills.”

He proved me wrong.

So I am trying to get creative.

He has now had three of each pill and I hope so hard that later today he has a regular poop.

My life has been way too much about “poop” as of late and I, we are ready for back to normal.

The weather has been great.

I am so grateful for the change in weather.

Sunshine has been such a relief.

I only want to go on our regular walks and then get back to work.

I hope that you all are enjoying life.

My life has been stressful the past few days but am hopeful Mr. Alvin is on the mend.

So hard to see my little guy suffering.

Despite his pain he has remained a happy guy.

A kind respectful gesture can be life changing.

Always, Carol & Alvin

P.S.

After I wrote this post earlier today I realized that I had missed out some very important information.

Throughout this stressful time both my daughter and son-in-law played an important role.

They offered up support and advice.

One of the bits of advice was from my son-in-law and that was back on Sunday in the thick of things when I was at my wits end.

He suggested putting Alvin immediately on a “bland diet” which would be cooked chicken breast (with no salt or spices) and white rice (no salt or butter added).

As I did not have any chicken breasts or rice in the house that afternoon; I quickly ran over to the nearby grocery store to pick up these items.

I added to this list some paper towel as it was needed during this time.

Upon returning home I quickly boiled up the chicken breasts and made some white rice, just plain old MINUTE RICE.

After I had everything cooked up I made a batch up for Mr. Alvin consisting of a ratio of 1/3 cup chicken to 2/3 cup of white rice.

I fed him half of the mixture and then two hours later fed him the other half.

I would say this was the beginning of a turning point for Alvin as it was that night that we had a full six hours of sleep.

We both desperately needed this sleep for health and sanity.

Alvin’s Doctor was pleased to hear that we had done this and I would never have thought of this; if had not been for my son-in-law.

I am eternally grateful to him for this bit of advice.

So I forgot to mention this earlier but he is to remain on this diet for up to five days.

Once he begins to have regular bowel movements I can slowly start to introduce his regular food back into his diet.

It is about 12:35 p.m. and I am pleased to report that Mr. Alvin has not had any “diarrhea” (oh, how I despise that word) since about 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

With luck, medication and prayers, he will be regular soon.

I am excited to get back to normal for both of us.

Life is full of ups and downs.

It is all how you view the whole picture that determines how your life will be.

I chose to look at it through light rose coloured glasses, seeing the glass half full and the positive in ALL situations and in ALL people.

Learning at each step of the way.

Until tomorrow……..

Living … One day at a time.

Hello,

Good Morning and today is Wednesday and my last day of work for “19” days.

I am over the moon excited for this vacation time.

Soon …. just a few more hours now.

In the meantime, back at the ranch.

Humphrey is spending our waking hours with us.

Well actually the hours that I am at home.

Soon to be during the day as well as in the evenings.

Last night he was sitting in Alvin’s chair glancing out the window and then around him.

I could not see what was so intriguing but there was something that piqued his curiosity.

So I snapped these photos.

While Humphrey was in Alvin’s chair – the boy was sitting beside me on the sofa.

Every so often Alvin would go by the chair, look out of the window and then lay on the mat by the chair.

I guess to see if Humphrey would maybe realize that it was his chair OR perhaps just to keep him company.

I don’t really know what the boy is thinking unless it involves FOOD.

The sky is clear now and the air is cool.

I have the windows open to keep the house cool for Alvin.

Actually last evening I had to turn off the fans as the house had cooled down and was comfortable for us while we hung out.

Well almost time to go downstairs and gather things up for work.

I made darn sure that I placed my office ID in my purse as yesterday I assumed it was in there and it was not.

I realized this when I was on my way to the bus …. way too late.

The last few minutes at home yesterday were not happy ones.

I wanted to let Alvin go outside for a last pee before I left for work only I could not open the back door.

Humidity … the door had swollen.

After trying for several minutes and starting to get frustrated and sticky hot, decided that was not the answer.

So with my trusty cell phone – I texted my neighbour as she was at home and has a key.

Explained what had happened.

Said she would come over.

Also texted a co-worker from the bus about my tag and she said that she would come down and let me in when I arrived at the office.

My neighbour went over and Alvin got to go outside and do his business.

I got into the office.

It was so much easier with the phone.

So grateful to my daughter and son-in-law for the phone.

Came in handy.

With kindness and respect the world is a more loving place to be.

Happy Wednesday.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Living … One day at a time.

Hello,

Well it is not cold temperature wise outside with clouds and patches of lightness filling the sky.

Our friend Teddy has been here since Thursday night.

Last night after work, I got all three of us ready for a walk.

Just after we left the house the sky got incredibly dark and it wasn’t long into the walk when there was thunder.

I figured likely better to just go to the park and then back home.

We got as far as the park entrance and the poop bag station.

Where I grabbed a few bags as I am still short on them.

My carpool picked some up for me but forgot to bring them.

Back to the story.

Grabbed the bags and turned around to come home just when there were a few drops.

We continued our regular pace.

We were about 3/4 of the way home when we met up with a friend walking her dog named Bear so you can only guess how large he is….

Alvin is used to him and Bear to him but Teddy started to bark.

Then the rain started to come down … we said quick hellos and our friend quickly mentioned that they had been caught in the rain four times prior to this time.

We did get some wet but got inside the door just when the heavens opened.

Whew.

It was just before I reached the front porch that I saw the downspout section had come loose and was lying on the ground between the houses.

So after taking the harnesses and leashed off the boys; I ran outside in that “downpour” to fix the downspout.

YAY, me, did it and back into the house.

The rain happened off and on for several hours.

Our walk was short but good.

Perhaps today we will get in a regular one.

I have another cute story.

While waiting for my ride yesterday morning; I thought that I could see eyes watching me.

Not human eyes.

Eyes from my front flower bed.

Well between the brightness of the morning sun and the now tall plants; it was hard to see.

I did not wish to scare what was in the floor bed … so from where I was standing on the front sidewalk I took my phone out of my purse and snapped a few photos.

Then I slowly walked to the sidewalk going up to my house ….  easily and slowly I walked a bit toward the lawn and snapped a couple more.

It was then that I realized that it was a …….

Wait for it ……

Ah …..

Cute bunny ….

I tried to zoom …..

The bunny was gone when I got home from work.

And the bunny did not eat any of my plants.

That was nice.

Perhaps not something good for their palate.

Well I have to get the show on the road.

Slept in …. after being up at 3:00 a.m.

Also noticed as going to make the bed ….. there was a “yellow stain.”

ARGH, pretty sure it was not there yesterday.

Thankfully I have good stain removal stuff and that I have a “moisture barrier cover” directly on the mattress and then a cover that gives some softness and then sheets etc.

So thankfully no damage done to the mattress.

Cannot believe I did not smell it or notice it before …. cannot lay the blame on one of the boys or the other.

Only thing that I know for sure … is that it was not me.

Oh, well, accidents happen.

No harm no foul.

It is fixed …. sprayed everything with the pet stain remover and now after this post …. down to the laundry.

I was going to wash the bedding anyway …. the second layer cover … I would not have but it needs to be refreshed anyway.

Moisture cover did the trick.

Highly recommend it to everyone.

Saves buying a new mattress.

Kind of a yucky story but stuff happens.

Not the end of the world.

I love the boys and although I will admit at first I was a bit “miffed.”

I did not yell or anything at Alvin or Teddy.

To end this post, some photos of my back yard and flowers.

I took these photos from inside the house through my big kitchen window.

I love my back garden …. the purple flowers are incredible.

They all are doing so well with the moisture.

Thank you for the rain, Mother Nature.

Have an awesome Saturday.

I need to change into some clothes.

PUT ON THE COFFEE.

Shortly will be going to pick up Mr. Humphrey.

Then will be me and the boys.

The THREE AMIGOS.

Should be fun.

Have to remember to change the batteries on this keyboard.

Oh, what a life.

It is a good life.

No complaints.

Thank you for reading this post and my blog.

I appreciate your time.

Always, Carol, Alvin and Teddy …..

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Thursday the 18th day of April, 2019.

WOW, another gorgeous sky this morning.

The sunrise is a pale orange on the horizon reaching up to fluffy darker orange clouds filling in the dark blue sky above.

So beautiful.

How do you describe it?

Breathtaking.

No wind the trees are still.

Just as I was going to open the back door for Mr. Alvin a few minutes ago I happen to glance out of the kitchen window and saw a dark figure on top of the fence.

My heart fell for a moment.

As I swallowed hard trying to catch a better look at this uninvited guest.

I realized that it was a big grey and white cat (huge).

I know that Alvin and Humphrey get along but that is not always the case.

Did not want to see fur flying or blood at this time of the day (or at any time, really).

I grabbed my phone and there was static on the other end (another reason that I really do need to buy new phone or get a mobile phone) so I was unable to call my neighbour.

When Alvin and I went outside I noticed that her back door was open so I yelled to her as I knew that Humphrey would be in the back yard.

You never know how they will react to each other.

S came outside just after Humphrey let out this cry.

He was just claiming his territory.

All ended well with Humphrey chasing the stranger around the yard and into the tree and then he left.

Alvin in all of this just wanted to see the action.

He just heard what was going on.

Anyway, note to self, “Always check the backyard before Alvin goes out.”

So that was our excitement for this morning.

Well almost time to go and I do believe that Mr. Alvin did not “poop” in all of the excitement.

So we had better head downstairs so he can go.

Would be a long day if you had to hold it.

I could not do it.

I hope that you enjoy your Thursday before the long weekend.

I booked Tuesday off as well so that I will have an extra long weekend.

Oh, our all day off-site staff meeting was most enjoyable.

We had an on-staff Consultant lead a session by Sally Hogshead on how to be your best self in the workplace (there was a specific title but it eludes me at this point but that describes what it was all

about).

I quite enjoyed it.

But as always is a long time to sit in one spot and the chairs were not comfortable.

Time to fly.

Alvin is already up off his blanket.

Special Hello to: my daughter …. Hello my darling.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Sunday the 25th day of February, 2018.

Sky is overcast this morning but warming up.

Yesterday over the course of the day it had warmed up.

I went out and finished canvassing for the Heart & Stroke Fund.

Unfortunately I did not obtain any monies from my assigned route.

My daughter has kindly made a donation and I will as well.

I guess two donations are better than nothing.

Have to rethink doing this next year.

Perhaps they could give me another route in my neighbourhood.

It was good exercise.

Well we girls had a great night last night.

Good food and good conversation.

The movie was actually very good.

Fifty Shades Freed.

I gather the first two movies in the trilogy were a bit more “exposed” but this one had a good story.

I did not see the first two movies but this one I enjoyed.

The evening was great.

Just received a phone call from the girl (my daughter) and she was up earlier than originally planned and is gathering Alvin’s stuff and will be leaving shortly.

She is bringing baby Milo with her.

So will have to cut this short.

Also I woke up with a cold, stuffy and my left ear is plugged.

ARGH.

I use my left ear on the phone.

Oh well …… with all of the folks coughing and sneezing on the bus and not covering their faces it is no wonder.

I hope that you all had a great weekend thus far.

I am excited to see my daughter, baby Milo and to have Mr. Alvin back home.

I surely missed him.

Special Hello to all those celebrating a birthday today.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Tuesday the 5th day of December, 2017.

The wind is howling away outside as the temperature rises past zero degrees today.

Another mild day on the way.

I am hopping a ride with my neighbour this morning as I have Christmas Cards to deliver and some cookies for my immediate co-workers.

Yesterday at lunch when I was checking my emails, I noticed three emails from my internet provider resulting in the last one stating that I exceeded my DATA plan, what??

Now could that be??

They even show how much I used over the last year and get this the highest I used out of 300 was 42 (cannot remember the actual measurement amount) so why now would I be at 318.

So I called them ….. I placed the call just before 6:30 p.m. and the recorded message stated it would be about an ONE HOUR WAIT …… really, I thought.

SO I have learned better to put the phone on speaker and carry about your business.

As I had the emails and my account open on the computer I stayed in my office instead of going downstairs to have supper …

I was late away because we went for a walk and delivered thank you card and some money for our friend who fixed our clothes dryer and then stopped at another neighbour ….

So I did some things on the computer while waiting for them to answer.

Not a fan of the music ….. sounded like the theme song from one of the daytime soaps ……

Decided while I was waiting so long that I had better eat as I was starving so warmed up my leftovers.

Not even five bites into supper ….

So after one half hour a female voice said “Hello” ….. she confirmed who I was and the problem before stating “Oh, I will transfer you to the technical support department and it will be about a 15-20 minute wait.”

Okay, I said half stunned.

What kind of customer service is this?

I guess because in Canada there are only a handful of internet providers that they have cornered the market.

I don’t know but here we go again.

Dessert …… then

Finally at the hour mark …. a male voice, said “Hello” and asked what was the problem.

I said I thought the other customer service person was going to explain at least that was what she said.

So I explained.

He even agreed with me that the usage seemed out of whack.

Figured that possibly I was hacked.

He gave me a $20 credit to my bill and after a total of one hour and fifty minutes, I was no further ahead but had a $20 credit to my bill.

Said he would follow up on Sunday and see if the usage continued to climb.

He did recommend that I change my user name and password, which I did.

If you ever have to call your internet provider and have to wait – just get some food and they will answer.

Well time to fly here.

I am disappointed in the customer service.

There is no customer service.

Bad buzz words.

Have a great Tuesday.

I am laughing because there is no way I am paying for more DATA and I certainly do not use anywhere near the limit I have now.

Special Hello to:  all those folks out there who spend precious time waiting for customer service via the phone.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Friday the 13th day of October, 2017.

Well the ground is dry but there is a heavy frost on the cars.

It is that time of year.

Yesterday was cool but when the sun shone it was quiet lovely.

I love this time of year.

We were asked to watch one of our friend’s doggie for tomorrow.

I am excited and I tried to explain to Alvin and he just looked at me and turned his head this way and that.

Perhaps he understood what I was jabbering on about …..

I hope that we all have a wonderful Friday.

Remember to be kind …. on the phone ….. in person ….. in the written word.

I know that sometimes I can be less than what I want to be ….. always a work in progress.

Always learning to be better and knowing that somedays it is difficult to get to that “better place.”

Have an awesome day.

I am grateful for a good week and look forward to the weekend.

Happy Friday the 13th ……

Special Hello to: all those folks who try everyday to be better than the day before …..

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day ….

Good Morning and Welcome to Thursday the 11th day of May, 2017.

A glorious morning ….. I can see the sunrise …… so beautiful.

Blue sky …… YAY…..

Doing the happy dance.

This has been a week full of little surprises.

All good.

Last night my youngest brother called me.

So nice to chat with him and catch up.

Life has a way of getting away on a person.

Sometimes you just have to take the time and catch up.

I hope that you all have a wonderful day.

May it be full of promise and fulfillment.

Happy Thursday everyone.

Special Hello to: my siblings ….. looking forward to seeing you all this summer.

Always, Carol and Alvin
