2021

Good Morning ALL. How are you doing today? Well it is an overcast rather dull looking day out there. Alvin and I were outside in the backyard a little while ago chatting with Bogart who was sitting atop of the railing on their deck trying to figure out a way to get over to us. Alvin was on the ground at the fence trying to figure out a way to get through the fence. Apparently we have pets that would like to visit. If it were possible we would put a door in the fence for them to visit but then Bogart might want to visit other neighbors and that would not work. Sonja and I were thinking about doing the “pet door” in our adjoining fence before Bogart came into our lives and it would have worked for Humphrey and Alvin. That would have been noteworthy for sure as how many have “pet doors” in their fences.

Last night as the first new snowflakes were fluttering down from the night time sky; I noticed how delicate and fluffy they were as they floated by me while I was standing inside at the back door looking out the window. So beautiful, each one so different. With the appearance of a tiny pillow, a little puffy throw that would nicely cover a small bee or other such insect. So very pretty. There was only a fine layer of fresh snow on the ground and covering the deck when we got up this morning. Now it is coming down with a bit more thickness than last night. I see shovelling in my future. Well there was a tad of it earlier but there will be more. Love fresh snow. So pretty.

One thing that I forgot to do and should do when I am finished this post and before the roof is covered in snow and perhaps it already is, is to gaze up from the deck and see if I lost shingles in that last huge windstorm that we had the other night. One of my girlfriends told me that another neighbour actually lost part of their roof whether she meant shingles, I forgot to confirm. Anyway shingles lost for sure, I know.

Well it is is the weekend. I have much on my TO DO LIST as I prepare for Mr. Alvin’s 12th Birthday party tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. I will be baking some cupcakes, vanilla today for the human guests. All three of us. I will also prepare a package to send home with Teddy and Kobi for their Mom & Dad to enjoy as they cannot join us. I will recheck the restrictions as I know some had been loosened a bit. We are taking the precautions as we do not wish to get the virus nor do we want to spread should I be one of those humans that is asystematic. For lunch for the humans just a simple pasta salad with lots of veg and chicken and then instead of a baguette, the next best thing …. garlic bread in baguette form. I have both a CHICKEN CAKE from Bone and Biscuit for the pups to enjoy plus some yogurt cups that I want to check out for them. I have little treat bags to do up for the guests. Regular laundry and cleaning and stuff.

Time to get this show on the road. Oh, almost forgot that I am going to watch the 6th episode of BRIDGERTON next. What a show. Even made this old gal, blush a bit. Good thing that Mr. Alvin was not watching, he would have turned away in spots for sure. LOL.

We wish you a wonderful Saturday. Remember to take some time just for you.

We will continue to live with kindness, respect, compassion and I am adding patience (mainly for me and Alvin).

Always, Carol & Alvin

2021

Good Morning ALL. How are you today? Alvin and I are sleep deprived. Not sure why but he had me up almost every hour since 3:00 a.m., he does not appear to be feeling unwell so will monitor the boy. He had a low key birthday as I was working. He received birthday wishes from his sister and brother-in-law and pups. We ended up short staffed on the after hours phone line so I worked till 7:00 p.m. and as I had started at 8:00 a.m. it was a long day. I was returning phone calls all day long and then on the phones after hours. Tired of speaking on the phone. Unfortunately I have a few calls yet to return and I sure hope that the phones are quiet today. Maybe everyone will be busy watching the United States Presidential Inauguration. I am excited to watch it however the business part of it will happen this morning while I am working but I am recording it to watch later and also the Balls, I enjoying watching them dancing and the entertainment. So a busy day for a lot of people. Sending good wishes for a wonderful celebration for the American people.

I am grateful that we had a nice walk at lunchtime yesterday. It was funny almost as soon as I was finished on the after hours phones last night the rain started, the wind howled and blew so hard I felt that the roof may blow away. As I looked out of the front window which faces north, it was raining and the trees were almost blowing over AND out the back door it was snowing and windy. My shovel blew crossway against the porch out front which has never happened. At the back both garbage cans that are against the fence not too far away from the house were laying on their sides. I left them that way thinking they may blow away next time although as garbage was picked up yesterday and they are near empty. The rain and snow eventually stopped but the wind gusts well into the night and is still blowing this morning. So what a night. Perhaps it was the wind that kept Mr. Alvin up …..

He is whining loud at the doorway so I had better sign off for now.

We are okay despite the lack of sleep or at least I am banking on that.

Please have an awesome day.

We will continue to live our lives with kindness, respect and compassion for all others.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day ….

Good Morning and Welcome to Saturday the 7th day of October, 2017.

WE SLEPT IN and I am so Happy.

Bed last night after ten …..

Alvin slept until 4:45 a.m.

We got up …. he ate and went outside and back to BED.

Up now just at 9:00 a.m. to the sound of the finishing touches of the roof going on the neighbour’s house.

This is the house that was badly burned at the end of June.

No sound is more joyful than the bang/click of hammers/electric nail guns as the house is being prepared for the owners to return home.

That is still a long way off ….. as the back side remains partially open.

The whole inside was cleaned out …. wood …. walls and all.

The roof was removed and the attic redone.

I am happy that they are working on the house ….. as winter is approaching.

So proud of me Alvin to give his Momma some sleep as I was TIRED.

Needed that sleep for sure.

The last couple of days at work were semi stressful and not horribly bad for sure.

Just that time of the month when a certain job is done which is tedious.

Perhaps that is a good word.

Anyway it is Saturday.

I just heard the geese honking as they fly by.

The sky is partially overcast as the sun is determined to clear to blue.

There is housework to do ….. COFFEE to make …… laundry to do and stuff.

There is always stuff and that is good.

I had best be getting this show on the road.

Have an awesome Saturday.

Special Hello to:  my sister and my friend “V” ……. thank you for your comments……miss you both……Happy Thanksgiving EVERYONE.

Always, Carol & Alvin

COUNTDOWN: 60 Days to 60

Today is Tuesday June 27, 2017 and it is the 44 day until my 60th Birthday.

I have to admit that when I started on item # 38 – I had to keep referring back to the other lists as I had forgot which ones that already been mentioned.

So I have decided to just put them all together and keep adding the new ones.

Sorry for the rather lengthy post.

I have often thought a BUCKET LIST would be nice but perhaps today I will do it in reverse.

Not the things that I want to do in the future but some of the things that I have done over the years.

Okay so this is going to be another 60 things list ….. but things that I have done not necessarily favourite things but things that I have done/accomplished, okay.

*****************************************

1. Started cooking at age 6 (have been cooking now for almost 54 years).

2. Camped with cousins on a dry river bed and did not know and then the rain started and we had to leave.

3. Played in the water at Padre Island / Gulf Coast of Mexico as a child while spending the winter in TEXAS with family.

4. Bought first house on my own at age 52.

5. Adopted first doggie (Alvin) on my own at age 53.

6. Started making jewellery and had own jewellery business at age 53 with my daughter.

7. Worked first real RETAIL job (small town clothing store does not count).

8.  In said RETAIL job even had “number 1 sales per hour” in the whole company (not bad for someone at age 57 working with mainly young ones).

9.  First paid babysitting job at age 8 for neighbours with toddler and newborn.

10. Tasted first FAST FOOD at age 18.

11.  When a child walked from my Grandparents farm to ours which was about five miles away (after disagreement with my Dad and it was at night).

12. Had a mock wedding as a prank on my Mother (so much fun and she loved it, too and honestly she did not believe it).

13. Rode on the hovercraft between Vancouver and Victoria back in, I believe it was about 1997 (they do not use them anymore).

14. Volunteered to canvas for Diabetes, Cancer, and Heart & Stroke many times over the years and as recent as 2017.

15.  Belonged to the Jaycettes  many years ago in Regina.  They did so much work in the community from fundraising to organizing neighbourhood watch groups.

16.  Also belonged to Downtowner Optimist Group in Regina (great experience helping community’s children) and had different roles from member to Vice President to President.

17.  Joined Capital City Cleanup (cleaning trash in my neighbourhood) when I moved to Edmonton and still do this on my own and not in an official capacity.

18.  Had supper in the revolving restaurants in both Niagara Falls and Toronto, Canada.

19.  Sat in the shade of lilac bushes as a toddler which was happened to be where there was a nest of baby mice and spent the next several decades being deathly afraid of them.  Also had a terrible nightmare that our root cellar as a child was filled with water and I had fallen in, it was dark of course, red eyes swimming toward me (rats) did not help with my phobia.  I am proud to say after a few experiences with them in the latter years has helped me.  After moving to Edmonton in my CLEAN, not old house, I had them (mice) and first time I spent three nights at my daughter’s house.  The next two times and hopefully the last I managed to live here.  Found that it does not matter how clean your house is …. if it is COLD outside, they will find a way to come in.  PROUD to say that even though they scare me they no longer terrify me.

20. As a teenager help save the life of a young boy who had been playing with fire in a barrel (someone was burning garbage).  As, I was leaving the cafe and turned down the back alley to go home I heard him screaming and saw him on fire.  I quickly sprang in action and got the flames extinguished so that he did not have worse burns.  Left him lying on the grass, and ran for help which was close by.  Thankfully he survived.

21.  As an adult I had several occasions either on my own where I happened to be in the right place at the right time and helped a young one in distress.  I am thankful.

22. On my only trip to New York City I visited the World Trade Centre.  Visited a company we worked with and it was quite the experience.  Rode up in the first bank of elevators and then had to get off and onto the second one.  Because of security concerns back in 1994, someone from the company I was going to see had to come and personally accompany me to their offices.  I remember the view from their offices.  We also had drinks on the concourse at the harbour which was amazing.  An experience I shall treasure always.

23. Travelled to Victoria, British Columbia by myself in 2010 and spent a few days exploring the city and admiring the beauty of Victoria.

24.  Started second “career” at age 54.  I plan to life until I am 100 so have lots of years left to do work and then “retire.”

25.  Attended all different schools from Grades 9 to Grade 12 in three different Canadian provinces.

26.  Sold through direct sales:  AMWAY, Fashion Two-Twenty make-up, Tupperware twice in two different provinces and Steeped Tea.

27.  Wrote Eulogies for four different family members and gave three of them.

28.  Started to write poetry at age eight years.

29.  Jobs have done over the years: Babysitting, Berry picker,  Executive Assistant (summer job), Keypunch operator, Bank Teller,  Claims Dispatch Clerk, Mapping Clerk, Reinsurance Underwriter, small town Ladies Clothing Shop, Customer Service Clerk at Retail store with largest sales at West Edmonton Mall, House Cleaning, File Clerk and Housing Clerk.

30.  Wrote Groom’s speech for my friend to give at her brother’s wedding.

31.  Broke handle off new shovel while digging out dead cedar tree from my back garden area two years ago.  Still do not believe that one.

32.  Grateful to have attended concerts for two of my favourite entertainers:  Celine Dion and Sir Elton John.

33.  Good at making meals from virtually nothing.  I love challenging myself to using everything in my pantry and fridge.

34.  Love making up new recipes.

36.   Grew up on the farm and helped with everything from stacking bales when haying, to housework, to looking after siblings, to cooking, gardening and other chores all before age 14.

37.   After moving from the farm in Saskatchewan to British Columbia …. my Mom, Sister and I spent that first summer picking berries.  Hard work but definitely had payoff.

Here are the next 12 items:

38.  Attended one of the first Bryan Adams concerts back in the 70’s before he was the headliner.  He stole the show.

39.  Was contacted by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal with respect to one of my blog posts.  That was so exciting.  We even spoke on the phone and emailed for awhile.

40.  Ate first oysters at age 18 …. friend made an oyster loaf and it was so good.

41.  Made the most changes in my life after the age of 51.

42.  I personally know one of the founding members of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, New York.   Started by “shaving heads” to raise money for Children with Cancer.  So proud of the work they do.

43.  First time drove the self-propelled combine I “ran into a log” …… no major damage done.

44.  Helped look after the runt of a litter …. baby pig ….. he was so cute.

45.  Learned to swim by being towed out into deep water and left to get back on my own.  I am not a great swimmer but I did not drown.

46.  I am learning to listen more as I get older.

47.  Was in the house when the funnel of a tornado was bearing down and by some miracle it hopped our house and took the roof off of the house directly behind us – not far away.

48.  I am finding that this is a difficult process.  Can this count?

Always, Carol

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Friday the 20th day of May, 2016.

It is raining here in Edmonton.

Started last night and has not stopped.

Most welcome after the City was blanketed late yesterday afternoon by SMOKE.

The wind changed just right and the smoke came right on in.

Fox Creek, another of our northern towns is threatened by forest fires.

The fire has stretched from Fort McMurray to the neighbouring province of Saskatchewan.

So much devastation along the way.

I sure hope that this rain is going everywhere that it is needed.

Likely not such the perfect day for a garage sale but you know it will work.

As long as we are having some much needed moisture it will be okay.

After all the garage sale is inside the garage so we will be dry.

It is so nice to have today off from work and to be at home.

I can take my time and finish off getting ready for the garage sale.

My daughter will be over later to help.

I am excited to visit with her and everyone who comes to our sale.

We always meet such wonderful people from our neighbourhood and from the area.

One funny story to lighten the morning.

This morning Alvin did not wish to go outside.

He had to go …. really had to go if you know what I mean.

So recognizing the signs he “DOES NOT LIKE RAIN” …. I grabbed my huge big umbrella and donned my flip flops and we went outside.

Funny thing is he did not even want under the umbrella …. he just wanted his Momma outside with him.

I guess he figure if he had to go out …. then I did, too.

Made me smile ….. a great way to start the day.

Now time to shower and get going on the final preparations for our two day garage sale.

If you are in Edmonton please drop by.

Have an awesome weekend.

For we Canadians we celebrate “Victoria Day” and most offices are closed for the day.

Special Hello to: Everyone …. thank you …. remember you are so important to us all.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Sunday the 20th day of December, 2015.

Only 4 days until Christmas Eve.

The party was great …. we drank coffee/tea …. we nibbled on sweets ….. we laughed ….. we exchanged gifts ….. we laughed some more.

Isn’t that what getting together over the holidays is all about?

Enjoying the company of friends and loved ones.

The sun is bright this morning and the sky is clear posing to be a great day.

Today will be one of those easy …. tidy up …. finish laundry kind of days.

I am still sitting in my pyjamas sipping on the first cup of coffee …. freshly perked.

Isn’t it crazy to know that today is December 20th and almost the New Year?

Each and every year seems to pass more quickly than the one before, not sure why.

I do try and fill each day of each year with so many good moments with lots of good thoughts.

I guess that is all that one can do.

One thing for sure when I compose my annual Christmas letter I always forget things that have happened throughout the year.

Not because they were any less important but mainly I think due to time passing so quickly.

Sometimes I forget that it was just a few months ago…

Time for reflection that is for sure.

Well on this last Sunday before Christmas … I hope that you are safe, warm and content.

Safe from any harm that life could bring your way.

Warm being comfortable with a roof over your head, food in your belly and with the bills all paid.

Content in knowing that you have done the very best that you could possibly do in any moment.

Have a great Sunday.

Enjoy a mug of hot chocolate or if you are in a warm place perhaps a fruity beverage.

Take care.

Special Hello to: my sisters and brothers all over this beautiful planet …. take care.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Saturday the 25th day of July, 2015.

It is a beautiful morning here in Edmonton with the sun shining brightly and a cool delicious breeze.

I have the windows open and the coolness gives me goosebumps.

What a wonderful sensation …. to be warm and cool at the same time.

Okay just disappeared into la-la land here.

I am back.

Time for a sip of the nectar meant for the soul …. COFFEE.

There is just something about a good cup of coffee that takes me to another place.

It teases my brain and settles my mind and sets me on a journey.

Really, coffee does all that?

Yes, it does ….

I am a coffee girl and although I love my tea in the evenings and I mean love there is just something about that cup of coffee especially on the weekends that sets the tone to my day.

Without it Saturday is just another day ….. Sunday follows Saturday.

I love the smell of coffee as it brews in my percolator.

I adore the feeling of the warm brew as it dances around in my mouth and disappears down, down, down.

I love a great cup of coffee.

There is no way of knowing just how many cups of coffee I have drank but it would likely be in the thousands.

Just happened to glance out the office window and oh my gosh the roof is now on the garage behind us.

He is a contractor who is building his own HUGE garage.

I swear the roof looks almost as high as the pitch on their house.

By the time it is built and the other neighbour across from them builds theirs we will feel like we are in a cocoon.

Nice and cozy.

I am so grateful for the parks/lakes close by.

At least when a person starts to feel closed in …. you can just go for a walk.

Well I guess it is time to get dressed and get going on this day.

I have relaxed long enough.

The laundry won’t get washed and dried and the tree will not get trimmed if I am sitting here on my “laurels”.

I wish you the best Saturday.

May it be filled with both work and play.

May you be surrounded by love and laughter.

Happy Saturday Everyone.

Special Hello to: all the writers out there ….. it is so wonderful to capture your life and thoughts on-line or on paper.

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day ……

Good Morning and Welcome to Monday the 11th day of May, 2015.

Beautiful morning after a beautiful day.

So great to see the sky beginning to lighten as me and Alvin arise at 5:00 a.m.

Alvin and I now have a routine, I would say.

Routine are good most especially for pets.

During the week we keep pretty much to a regular schedule.

Do you have a schedule or is every day different?

I am lucky because I have one job now, same hours every day. Upon arriving at home it is let Alvin outside, feed Alvin and then get changed, go for a walk, and then have supper.  Most evenings just do bit of tidying up and anything that requires immediate attention, and other than that we relax on the sofa.  By relax I mean watch a bit of television.  Sometimes I just get lost in the moment gazing out the living room while snuggling with Alvin.

Most of us working folk only have a few waking hours at home during the week.

It is crazy how many hours we spend away from home, at work ….

To have a roof over our heads, food in our bellies and to pay the bills.

I like to get to bed during the week at the same time.

I tend to leave the big jobs for the weekend.

Now that the lawn requires attention I would rake it and water it during the week of course.

Perhaps leave the mowing for the weekend.

We all do what works best for us.

You never know what the day will bring.

I am hoping for a quiet day that I can accomplish everything on my TO DO LIST (at work).

Well here it is almost time to leave and looking out the office window I can see the sunrise ….

It is going to be a glorious day ….. the sky is clear with a slight breeze.

I do kind of enjoy the bus ride to work …. mainly because I get on one bus and go all the way to work.

Sometimes in the evening it takes three buses to get home if you miss that one.

Oh well, life is pretty great on this end.

I hope that you all had a great Mother’s Day ….

I was absolutely spoiled ….. huge ( BIG ) bouquet of roses, gerber daisies, carnations, hydrangeas,  and several other flowers who names elude me at 6:00 a.m. …… the most beautiful card, and the company first and foremost of my daughter and grand-puppies.

We even went out for a bit to run some errands and I picked up one of Mike Dooley’s book (started to read last night), some wooden spoons, couple of cool place mats for the kitchen table and some groceries and a pot of flowers for the deck.

WHAT a great day.

Still excited ……

Okay gotta go ….. have a great Monday.

Clear skies ahead.

Special Hello to: all my friends and family ……

Always, Carol and Alvin

Thought for the day……

Good Morning and welcome to Monday, October 22, 2012 ….. whoops I missed a date somewhere.

Earlier when I was writing in my gratitude journal I marked today as Monday, October 21st, 2012.

So somewhere over the weekend I got one day behind…….

Oh well …….

So what is your plan for this day, for this week …..

I have work for the first three days followed by a one day seminar/course at work and then my Friday off.

I am so blessed that I can work the extra time each week so that every second week I can get an extra day off.

It makes having a second job easier with having a two day weekend here and there.

This past weekend was grand.  I got lots of housework done (still have to do the fans, light fixtures and baseboards but perhaps that will be this coming up weekend).

Also was able to have a couple of “coffee visits” and spend an afternoon working on jewelry ….. I made a beautiful necklace with touches of red.

It will be posted on FB over the next week or so.

I love making jewelry …. so relaxing.

So that was my weekend and my week to come.  I hope that you are enjoying life.

Even though most of us have to work to support our habits of having a roof over our heads and eating …. (giggling out loud) …. I hope that in between you can find the time to relax, have a few laughs and simply enjoy your time on this earth.

I am going to practice being a better person ….. I always try to do better than the day before and perhaps one day I shall strike perfection …. whatever that may be.

So on this Monday …. I hope that you are feeling great ….. that you had a wonderful sleep and that you have a comfy bed.

I hope that you are surrounded by love and laughter.

Take care.

Special Hello to:  us all …….

Always, Carol and Alvin
