The New YEAR 2022

Good Morning ALL! How are you this morning? It is extremely windy here in my neighbourhood and likely in the rest of Edmonton and surrounding areas. Feels like the vents are going to be pulled right out of the house. I was happily surprised when I opened the front door that my shovels and little tree had not blown over. But the force of the gust when I opened the door covered me in snow. Wasn’t that a lovely blast at 4:30 a.m. this morning. Anyway, not very nice outside. I would imagine that outside of the city and on the highways that visibility is not great. Looks like we have fresh snow but I cannot see it snowing. I cleaned the backdoor area at 4:30 for Alvin and then there was even more snow a few minutes ago. The wind actually woke me up I think somewhere around 3:00 or even earlier. Very strong. Be careful out there. My daughter is bringing the grand pups in for a vet appointment at 2:00 p.m. – hopefully things have calmed down by then otherwise they may have to cancel again. They cancelled the other time due to ice and snow. What a winter this has been. I have asked to take the afternoon off if they make it into the city. I sure hope so but only if it is safe. Certainly do not wish my family to be driving in less than safe conditions. I guess time will tell when it becomes light outside. I am so grateful that Alvin and I spent some time outside yesterday. We went for a walk and found our friends out chipping away at the ice and snow. They live on the corner and have the long sidewalk. Bless their hearts in their 70’s they are out clearing the ice away so that people would not fall and the other folks on the corner lots, not out doing anything. Very sad. Anyway, it was so nice that Alvin and I walked the length of their property and then down the street north of them which happened to be pretty clear and dry. So we did that about four times which is about the length of going to the park. So it was some fresh air and safe walk and a visit to boot. We had a great day.

I put away most of the last of my Christmas decorations including the Christmas cards. Now I have to finish packing everything away in the basement. I have a few things waiting to be reorganized. I also went to make a pitcher of fruit tea with ginger ale and I must have hit the sink as the picture shattered with ginger ale and fruit tea flying in every direction. It took me about 30 minutes to wash down the counter, cupboards, the floor and baseboards. There was ginger ale everywhere. Inside the cupboards, too. What a waste of a big bottle of ginger ale. But stuff happens. There was just a big hole in the side of the picture. Luckily the only thing on me that was sticky were my socks.

In between the ginger ale incident and the walk and taking down the remainder of Christmas decorations, I managed to watch three Star Trek movies (give or take a few minutes here and there). I love those movies.

Well that is all that is new from our house. I really had to coax Alvin to go outside. I cannot blame him. It is not fit outside for man or beast. Mom or Alvin.

I hope that you have a good day. Keep safe and warm. If you have to be out driving – make sure that you leave the house early, make sure that you have an emergency kit in the vehicle and drive carefully and do not speed. I want you to be safe.

Continuing to live this life with kindness, respect, compassion, patience, love, laughter, understanding, gratitude, focus and possibilities.

Always, Carol & Alvin

P.S. so grateful to be working from home. I have to thank two of my neighbours for putting the rubber weather stripping back on the bottom of the garage door. So grateful for that family and every family surrounding me. I am surrounded by good people.

The New YEAR 2022

Good Morning ALL! How are you on this Thursday, January 27, 2022? Alvin and I are well. Dark outside at this time but cannot wait until the sunrise. They are so beautiful. Sometimes filled with shades of pinks and purples other times yellows and oranges. No matter the colour palette – they are so gorgeous. There is something about a sunrise that just brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart. I should have downloaded/uploaded the photos that I snapped the other morning with my phone. So pretty.

Well Mr. Alvin has started something as of the past few weeks and that is sometimes he will not drink from his water dish/bowl without me beside him and actually touching him. He barks if I am in another room forcing me to stay with him while he drinks. I am not sure what has got into him. He can see, I am sure of that. But his anxiety level seems to have increased. I will continue to be patient with him and help him through his senior years. Just like he helps me. He has medication for anxiety but I do not want to give him pills all the time because he seems calm most of the time. Anyway, something to monitor. Keeping him happy, relaxed but most of all healthy during these times is paramount. We, I need him to be in good health.

Yesterday a small fleet of small caterpillars with blades were out moving the snow around. They did not have the trucks out hauling away the snow. I am not sure if the City is planning on doing that or not. Should check the City Website and see. A City of Edmonton vehicle was parked out front on the street yesterday and she was checking out the neighbour who parked their truck on their lawn. She spoke to someone on the phone and took some photos and left. It was later when the cats showed up in the neighbourhood moving snow around. One of the drivers got out of his machine and went to their door and spoke to them. The Mrs. came out and moved the truck off the lawn. They pushed all of the excess snow onto their lawn. They have a massive amount of snow on their lawn. Hopefully it melts and does not flood their basement in the spring. Thankfully most of us are up sloping down to the street. So we should be okay. Anyway they can now park on the street. I was wondering if they are going to do that with all of the snow? That would be a mess. Time will tell. There were some of the big graders out here yesterday as well. In all of the almost thirteen years since I moved here, I have never seen that many graders/cats out for this length of time.

Well that is my news for now. I am looking forward to that first cup of coffee this morning. I can smell the aroma floating up from the kitchen and it tickles my nose and warms my heart and soul. I love, love, love COFFEE. Did I say that I loved coffee, lol? Yup, I do.

Have a wonderful day. If you love coffee, I hope that you are able to have a cup or the beverage of your choice. Something that would be a good way to start the day. Be safe and kind to yourself and to others.

Continuing to live this life with kindness, respect, compassion, patience, love, laughter, understanding, gratitude, focus and possibilities.

Always, Carol & Alvin

P.S. yesterday I helped my neighbour give Mr. Bogart his pain meds and medicine. Not an easy thing to do with a big cat. He weighs I think she said “17” pounds. He had to have surgery to put in shunts as he was playing too hard with his brother and was injured. Yikes. Wishing Bogart a speedy recovery.

Thought for the day ….

Good Morning and Welcome to Wednesday the 15th day of August, 2018.

It is 6:35 a.m. and still dark outside.

What a change from a week ago.

The sky appears to have be overcast but as I lean out the window I can smell smoke.

It is almost eerie.

The lightness of the sky seems to provide light on the objects below.

From my office window it appears as though people have a dim light shining on their decks, in their yards.

Just having the windows open for a short time for the cool air.

Our temperatures have cooler down which is good for sleeping and for our fur babies.

Last night my daughter gave me a ride home from work.

We stopped at a local Japanese restaurant and picked up noodle bowls for supper, my treat.

I just wanted something different.

They were really good and neither of us could finish so leftovers for tonight.

The birthday cake made by my co-worker has been a HUGE hit.

Carrot cake with cream cheese icing, how can you go wrong.

Alvin and I went for a walk last night making a stop at our friend’s home ( I and N).

I had packed up some birthday cake for them.

I was going to call ahead and decided not to.

We walked over with the cake in tow.

Rang the door bell twice.

No answer.

Called out for them by the garage as their vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Nothing.

Walked beside the house thinking they might be in the backyard and did not hear the doorbell.

No reply.

Okay, that was odd.

So cake in tow we walked home and I called our friends.

She answered right away.

They were working in the garage and had the radio turned on and up.

Did not hear us.

So we walked back there (not far) and we gave them some birthday cake.

We stayed and had a visit.

I had not realized that it was still that warm so afterward we walked home.

A short walk but that is okay.

Too much smoke to be breathing in ….

My carpool called this morning and they are staggering the entry to her office building this morning so she is picking me up at 7:30 a.m. instead of 6:45 a.m.

If I missed telling you this story.

On my last day of work – my friend’s office building was closed down due to a water main break.

Two weeks later it is being reopened.

Unexpected vacation for some folks.

My friend had most of the time already booked off for vacation.

You never know what can happen.

Oh, the smell of smoke is getting stronger.

I will have to close the windows that are still open.

Do not wish to fill the house in smoke, not good for Mr. Alvin.

He is laying patiently on his blue blanket beside me in the office.

Well time to go and work on the photos so that I can post about my trip.

Lots to add to my word press library which means I have to delete others.

I am so excited to share both the photos and our trip with all of you.

Coming soon!

Have an awesome Wednesday.

Stay safe.

In the heat watch your children and animals closely.

DO NOT LEAVE in a vehicle.

HOT sidewalks / pavement can burn the pads of a dog’s paws.

Special Hello to: my friends and family who make my world turn around.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Wednesday the 10th day of January, 2018.

Brr, it is a COLD one here in Edmonton and most part of the WESTERN CANADIAN PROVINCES.

We seem to be having one week with warm temperatures and then the next bitterly COLD ones.

I am grateful for the break in between this COLD SNAP.

It is funny, no I mean strange that when it is cold all you think about is eating and sleeping.

Bundled up, warm sweater, blankets and next to your significant other or in my case snuggling with Alvin.

He does generate a lot of heat.

On these cold mornings it is hard for him to go outside.

I always wait right by the door to let him back into the house the moment that he is done his business.

There is no taking your time on these mornings and days.

I feel bad for him.

Just keeping warm.

I will be laying layers onto my regular warm clothing today.

Bringing out the big boots.

I just want to sleep …… snuggle up with Alvin under a warm blanket and sleep.

That is the cold weather talking.

Argh, have to leave the house.

Oh well, that is life.

My choice.

To all those folks living in a “deep freeze” please be aware of how you are dressed, your children are dressed, and DO NOT LEAVE your PETS outside.

Make sure as in the heat you keep hydrated.

Well almost time to go and start the layering process.

Need to do this when you are walking and catching a bus.

Happy Wednesday.

The next few days are all about the weather and keeping warm.

Take care.

Be safe.

If you are driving – make sure that you have emergency items in your vehicle.

Special Hello to: my family and friends all over the world.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day …..

Good Morning and Welcome to Thursday the 19th day of October, 2017.

Another gorgeous day on the way and with luck with a tad less wind.

Have to share my Wednesday story as this all happened after I left from home and after I wrote my blog.

As I walk up to the entrance to our office building, I come across one of my co-workers with her travel mug in one hand and a Tim Horton’s coffee in the other.

She smiled and handed my the Tim Horton’s coffee and said “this is for you.”

For no reason ….. not my birthday ….. no special occasion ….. just because she is thoughtful.

I was so touched …..

Now this would have been the best way to start a work day BUT then after almost reaching my desk …. another co-worker … held out his hand with a bagged “apple danish” from McDonald’s…. Would you like this?

I said sure …. as I had my hands full …. he placed it on my desk.

Could not have been a better start to the work day to be sure.

Our office was closed to the public and I was to attend along with some of my immediate co-workers a training seminar on “deescalating situations.”

I was a bit intimidated by the whole role playing and the fact that I was missing quiet time at my desk.

To have no phones and no interruptions at work is always a good way to get work completed.

But into the training I realized that this was in fact most valuable.

I learned two things:

  1. that at 60, I had learned and knew how to react to escalated situations.
  2. and that at 60, I still had room to learn new ways to react to escalated situations.

No matter your age – there is always something new to learn, and we can always be taught something new.

After a long day of role playing and waiting around while our team-mates took their turns …. the day was over.

I walked to the bus – happy to get home to me Alvin.

Shortly after I made it to the bus stop …. my new friend E.Z. arrived at the stop.

It was not long after that when two of the buses that we can catch, pulled up….

The first bus appeared to be full so we walked to the second bus and that is when I heard “Carol” ….. hey that was my name.

As I looked a couple of vehicles behind the bus there were the OILERS FLAGS blowing the wind and my friend in the red vehicle.

I said good night to my other friend and ran over to the red vehicle.

Surprised to see her – she explained that her son was working late and she thought as she had to go right here anyway …. she would take the chance.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

What a lucky day.

Unbelievable.

Coffee / Apple Danish / Learn New Things / Ride Home

Great Day.

Now this Thursday is going to be amazing.  I can just tell.

Perhaps I should check my LOTTO Ticket ???

OMG.

Special Hello to:  all those folks over 60 – still learning new things.

Always, Carol & Alvin

Thought for the day……

Good Morning and Welcome to Thursday the 29th day of January, 2015.

Well I decided to take an extra few minutes of sleep this morning ….

Now I am running a bit late.

So this will be short.

I apologize.

Just an observation.

Yesterday on way to bus (after work).

As I approached the corner to cross; I noticed one of our “meter people” placing a ticket on a vehicle.

As she placed the ticket on the vehicle the window came down on a vehicle waiting to cross at the lights and a young man yelled ” you are not making someone’s day” and then as the light changed he yelled that she was doing a bad job.  (not his exact words but you get the idea).

I firmly replied:  “You are doing a great job.”

Why does this have to happen?

Time to go.

Special Hello to: all those meter people.

Always, Carol and Alvin
